Applicant Tracking Software (ATS)
While job seekers can't directly control application software or algorithms, there are ways to improve automated hiring system applications. Technology may be a gatekeeper, but there are a few ways to work with the system for optimal results.
✅ Tailor The Resume
Online ATS often uses keyword-matching to score candidates. To improve ATS applications:
Mirror the job description: When possible, use exact phrases from the posted job, especially with skills, certifications, and previous job titles.
Avoid creative language: Skip resume buzzwords or clever phrasing. “Marketing Ninja” might sound fun, but “Digital Marketing Specialist” will likely align with the job ATS keywords.
Include both acronyms and full names: For example, use both "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)" and not just the acronym SEO.
✅ Use a Clean Resume Format
Several ATS are in use, and many systems do not like complex resume formats or graphic layouts. To avoid a resume from getting filtered out of the ATS:
Simple formats and standard fonts are best. Avoid tables with columns, graphics, or customized fonts.
Use standard headings such as Experience, Skills, and Education.
Save the resume file as a .docx or PDF. Always follow the application file format instructions.
✅ Focus on Contributions and Measurable Results
Depending on the job, ATS may prioritize measurable outcomes and technical skills over soft skills.
Highlight certifications, training, tools used, and measurable results (e.g., “Increased web traffic by 55% in 12 months.”)
Include job description, industry-specific experience, tools, or platforms such as CRM, Salesforce, Workday, or Python.
✅ Don’t Try to Game the Algorithm
Humans hire humans, so connections and interview skills matter. An ATS may screen resumes, but networking or getting a job referral from a colleague can bypass the ATS requirement.
Connect with colleagues and let them know specific jobs of interest or targeted organizations.
Follow up with recruiters and hiring managers.
Attend industry and association events where you can meet company employees.
✅ Be Strategic With Application Platforms
Complete all fields in applications—optional fields sometimes boost your application ranking. This includes completing the “additional information” section.
Use achievement-oriented language and quantifiable metrics.
Avoid long paragraphs. Bullet points are easier to scan.
When possible, always upload your resume and cover letter files.
ATS is a system trying to automate human potential decisions. So, optimize the resume for both an ATS and humans.
